V.2 I sleep, but my heart waketh; it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying: "Open to me my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled, for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with drops of the night." IV.9 Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of your eyes, with one chain of thy neck.

"I Heard My Lover Knocking" was commissioned for JUBAL'S LYRE and is receiving its premiere performances in this series of Passover concerts. Its Welsh-born composer Andy Vores was a Fellow in Composition at Tanglewood in 1986, and has lived in the U.S. since 1987. His recent commissioned works include the two-act comic opera "Freshwater" for the B.U.Opera Institute and "Sh'ma" for the Brookline Chorus (first performed last April as a Holocaust Memorial observance, and to be performed again this year at Boston College on April 27). Upcoming projects include "The Bull-Dancer" for the Boston Ballet's '97-'98 season and a new work for the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra's South African tour in 1997.
